The Castro Marim salt pans, on the banks of the Guadiana River, have been producing sea salt for the last 2000 years. Here, the tradition sees the collection of sea salt without either machinery or chemicals.
On your visit to the salt pans, in the Castro Marim Marsh Nature Reserve, you may also explore the banks of the river and observe birds including spoonbills, flamingos, white storks, stilts, avocets, collared pratincoles, little terns and slender-billed gulls.
You may close your visit with a spa moment very much in the fashion of the Romans and Moors and take a dip in the salt baths of Barquinha. Float away and relax in these waters rich in salt minerals.
